The production of Daihatsu Sparcar has begun in 1981. The new model was built on the S65-S66 platform. These cars lacked a bonnet, since the engine was located underneath the cabin. In 1983, vans entered production, which were defined by a spacious passenger compartment, several rows of passenger seats including folding seats and a capacious luggage compartment.

Daihatsu Sparcar vehicles were relatively compact. The wheelbase depended on the body type, and measured 1815 or 1820 mm. The length of the car was of 3165 mm, the width - 1395, and the height varied from 1660 to 1820 mm.

Daihatsu Sparcar cars have been known on some markets as Daihatsu 55 Wide, Daihatsu 850/1000, Daihatsu Atrai. In China, they were called Huali Dafa. Various countries saw the Daihatsu Sparcar sold as the sixth generation of Daihatsu Hijet.
