Daihatsu CopenDaihatsu Copen cars have been produced since 2002 in roadster, coupe and three-door hatchback bodies. It replaced the Daihatsu Leeza Spyder on the market. Nowadays, two generations of Daihatsu Copen have been presented. Cars are being assembled in Japan.
Daihatsu Copen Ist generationThe Daihatsu Copen concept car has been presented at the Tokyo motor show in 1999. In 2002, the cars hit the European market. Daihatsu Copen was a classic kei car, a type that was popular in Japan. These cars were defined by their compact body size - no more than 3400 mm in length and 1500 mm in width. Additionally, according to Japanese law, the engine displacement must have not surpassed 0.6 liters. On the Japanese market, Daihatsu Copen had engines of exactly this type, complete with a turbocharger, but the engines did not comply with European standards. This led to a car with a 1.3 liter engine being designed for the foreign markets.
The exterior of the Daihatsu Copen was characterized by fluid, expressive body lines, round front and fog lights and a large radiator grille. Its metal roof could be retracted into the trunk with a single button press, reducing the trunk’s volume from 200 to 14 liters.
The design of the Daihatsu Copen’s interior was defined by its sports looks, high quality of materials and manufacture, and perfectly fitted elements. Seats with lateral support have been installed in the passenger compartment, with Recaro seats offered as an option. The main indicators’ dials were placed on a compact dashboard, with A/C deflectors and various system controls near it.
The production of the first generation of Daihatsu Copen has been stopped in April 2012. The cause for this decision was the unstable exchange rate of the Japanese national currency.
Daihatsu Copen IInd generationIn 2013, the Kopen concept-car has been presented at the Tokyo motor show, marking the debut of the 2nd generation of Daihatsu Copen. The exterior of the stock cars, which have been presented in two packages (Daihatsu Copen Cero and Daihatsu Copen XPlay), stood out with its expressive shapes and new elements. Designers have installed a massive six-sided radiator grille and large block headlights, chromed door handles and stylish wheel discs. A feature of the car’s interior was the front panel. It was manufactured from 13 distinct polymer components, 11 of which could easily be replaced for others of a different design and/or color.
Daihatsu Copen on various marketsIn January 2016, during the Tokyo motor show, another two concepts were presented: CERO Coupe Concept and Copen Robe Shooting Brake Concept B in hatchback and coupe bodies. To date, Daihatsu Copen are being produced only for the Japanese market.
