Lancia Kappa
Lancia Kappa was a flagship model of the producer from 1994 to 2001. It was available in three body types— a sedan, a five-door station wagon and a coupe.
Lancia Kappa I generation
After lengthy preparations, Lancia Kappa was presented at the Paris motor show in 1994. The car was meant to replace the Lancia Thema model and compete with such top models as Audi A6, BMW of the 5th series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
In many aspects Lancia Kappa cars surpassed the predecessors: the spacious passenger compartment, impressing drag coefficient because of more streamlined body, high quality of assembling. The design of the car was developed by specialists of the Lancia Style Center in cooperation with I.De.A Institute. Exterior of Lancia Kappa was quite attractive: smooth outlines of the body, classical radiator grille, rectangular blocks of front and back optics, big rear window.
The comfy passenger compartment was trimmed with velour, alcantara or hand-crafted leather from elite furniture Poltrona Frau firm. The front panel was covered with plastic of two colours — gray and beige. In the upper part of the central console the screen of the on-board computer was placed and the information about the operation of the car was output to this screen. The design of seats with multi-type support provided equal distribution of weight of the passenger's body. In more expensive packages seats were equipped with heating, electric adjustment and adjustment memory function. Several years later after the beginning of Lancia Kappa production, sun-protection Solextra glass began to be included even in the basic package. Besides the hydraulic power steering, the Servotronic system was offered as an extra option. Also washers of front headlights and an electric chromic rear-view mirror should be noted among accessories.
In the middle of 1996, the elegant Lancia Kappa station wagons went on sale; they were designed by Lancia designers in cooperation with specialists of Pininfarina firm. Same year at the motor show in Turin the presentation of the model in a coupe body took place but it did not find special demand in the market and the production was terminated two years later. Also by the special order of the head of Fiat - Gianni Agnelli - two limousines of Lancia Kappa were produced.
Lancia Kappa I generation restyling
In 1998 at the motor show in Turin the presentation of the renewed Lancia Kappa took place. External changes were insignificant: the bumpers, which earlier had black plastic inserts, became monochromatic. As for the interior, there was no beige colour in the trimming any more, and the steering wheel had new design. Cars began to be equipped with cruise control, navigation system, side air bags and xenon headlights with self-adjustment.
Production of Lancia Kappa cars came to the end in 2001 with the release of Lancia Thesis.
