Characteristics of SAE 15W-40 engine oil
- SAE 15W-40 engine oils are lubricants for turbocharged or naturally aspirated petrol and diesel engines. They can be used on cars equipped with catalytic converters.
- They are mostly designed for commercial vehicles, but can also be used in the power units of high-mileage passenger vehicles. In addition, there are products for modern high-performance engines.
- Usually, these oils are mineral. The products with semi-synthetic base can be seen more rarely.
- Lubricants of this viscosity efficiently protect the engine from wear and corrosion, prevent formation of carbon deposits, keeping the power unit clean.
- The 15W grade indicates that they can be used at the temperatures down to −20 °C. The number 40 in the marking specifies that the kinematic viscosity of these products doesn’t exceed 16.3 mm2/s. And the dynamic viscosity is 3.7 mPa·s, as that of more viscous products.
- These lubricants are characterized by low evaporation rate, therefore they require topping up less frequently.
