Characteristics of SAE 10W-40 engine oil

• Lubricants of this category are suitable for most diesel and petrol engines, excluding those operating on low-viscosity energy-saving oils.
• The 10W marking describes the low-temperature properties of the lubricant. It indicates that this product retains the fluidity sufficient for starting the engine at temperatures down to ౼25°C, and the oil itself is capable of being pumped through the system at ౼25°C. The number 40 indicates the high-temperature properties and means that the kinematic viscosity of the product at 100°C is within the 12.5–16.3 mm2/s range and dynamic viscosity at 150°C and the shear rate equal to 106 s−1 is 3.5 mPa·s.
• SAE 10W-40 engine oils can have mineral, semi-synthetic or fully-synthetic base.
• Due to their rather high viscosity, these oils create a strong oil film on the surface of engine parts and can properly seal gaps, which is especially important for high-mileage vehicles.
• Mostly they are produced in plastic bottles and containers with 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 7- and 10-litre capacity.
