Hyundai PonyProduction of the Hyundai Pony model continued from 1974 to 1990. Cars were assembled in Ulsan, South Korea. The model became the first South Korean car of mass production.
Hyundai Pony I generationThe Hyundai Pony model debuted in October, 1974 at the Motor Show in Turin. The car was the result of cooperation of the Korean car maker Hyundai Motor Company and the Japanese corporation Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. Originally cars had one body type only - sedan. In May, 1976, station wagons were manufactured, in April, 1977 — pickups, and in March, 1980 — three-door hatchbacks went on sale.
Thanks to the excellent combination of price and quality, the Hyundai Pony model won recognition of motorists in domestic market of South Korea. In 1976 cars began to be exported to Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador and Egypt, and in 1978 — to Belgium and the Netherlands.
Straight lines were characteristic for a design in the exterior of the first generation model. Round headlights and corner marker lights, wide radiator grille became the external features of the model. Sedans and hatchbacks had black plastic front bumper and moldings. The pickup had mirrors established on the front fenders.
Hyundai Pony II generationIn 1982, production of the Hyundai Pony of the second generation started. The same year sales in Great Britain began therefore the model became the first Korean car in the British market. Since 1983 cars also began to be exported to Canada.
The model of the second generation was produced in bodies of a pickup and a five-door hatchback. It differed from the predecessor both in exterior and interior, and hardware. External changes affected front optics: round headlights were replaced with square ones.
From 1984 to 1986 cars were offered in three modifications: standard L and expanded GL (deluxe) and GLS (glorious). In GLS modification seat could be developed in the correlation 50/50 and were completely sheathed by high-quality cloth. The tachometer was optionally offered.
Hyundai Pony in the markets of the different countriesIn Europe since 1985 the front-wheel Hyundai Excel model has been on sale under the name Hyundai Pony Excel. Cars with such name succeeded rear-drive cars and have been manufactured till 1989. In some markets cars were called Hyundai Excel.
