The production of Hyundai Santa Fe crossovers began in 2000 and continues nowadays. In total, three generations of the model were released. The car was in great demand in the USA and Europe.

In spring of 2006 in Detroit the presentation of Hyundai Santa Fe CM took place. The wheelbase of the car made 2700 mm. The car was equipped with the 4WD Lock system. Assembly of cars of the second generation was carried out at factories in South Korea, the USA, Malaysia and Egypt. By results of EuroNCAP crash tests the car had four stars.

In a basic packaging, the car was equipped with active head restraints, Isofix fastenings, front and side airbags, and also systems of electronic stability control (ESP), an anti-lock brake system (ABS), brake-force distribution system (EBD) and control of tire pressure. Front window wipers were equipped with system of heating.

In 2008 the improved audio system and the modified system of navigation were included in a basic packaging. Some cars began to be equipped with a glass panoramic roof. In 2009 the socket for iPod was installed in a car , the list of basic options was filled up by black side mirrors, and in some markets — new wheel disks with a diameter of 16 inches.

In 2010 the Hyundai Santa Fe CM cars received a new radiator grille and the modified optics. Quality of an inner trimming was significantly improved, and the basic set began to be equipped with Bluetooth system. In 2012 the rear door was decorated with the chromeplated molding.

The presentation of a new Hyundai Santa Fe DM took place at the New York Motor Show in 2012. The car had four passenger seats. The Hyundai Grand Santa Fe cars with the wheelbase enlarged by 100 mm had six passenger seats.

Triangular foglights with the integrated LED running lights were built in the front bumper. There were massive blocks of the main optics with the chromeplated radiator grille with the logo plate in the center. On the hood there was a power bulge in the form of a trapeze.

The base of a rear door of a car had a small spoiler with integrated stoplight. The rear Hyundai Santa Fe DM optics was divided into four separate blocks. The car was equipped with a dual exhaust pipe.

The model of the third generation had the maximum five stars for a successful passing of EuroNCAP crash tests, then Hyundai Santa Fe DM was awarded by the "The Safest Crossover of 2013" rank.

The cars of the first generation were sold also under the names of Hyundai Santa Fe Classic and Hawtai Santa Fe SUV. The second generation of Hyundai Santa Fe was known in Malaysia as Inokom Santa Fe, and in China — as Hawtai Bolgheri.
