The production of The Peugeot 404 cars was established from 1962 to 1989. Cars produced with a body versions as a sedan, a convertible, a coupe, a wagon and a pickup truck were presented on the market. This car has been repeatedly used during the East African rally and has come first to the finish line for a few times. These victories have made a great contribution to the company's image on the African continent and outside of it.

All cars were presented at the Paris Motor Show. In 1960 a Peugeot 404 sedan made its debut, a year after – as a convertible and in 1963 – as a coupe and a wagon.

The Peugeot 404 exterior was developed by Pininfarina studio. Designers smartly combined features of the Italian and American automotive fashion. A large windshield with rounded corners, protruding headlights and elongated hind wings were typical for the exterior of the first generation cars. Due to a large number of windows mounted in a sedan and a wagon there was an excellent visibility.

The Peugeot 404 soft-top cabriolet gained popularity quickly. Many exterior elements were chromed: front bumper, moldings. Due to a high windscreen and small windows, it was comfortable inside the car even when driving at high speed with an open roof. The first generation coupe did not become popular: one of the most important reasons was its high price.

A first generation cars restyling was conducted in 1965. The main changes of the coupe affected its exterior: the designers changed the shape of the fog lamps and put them on the bottom of the front bumper. The interior was not changed. Drivers noticed the coupe in 1967, when the developers added chrome elements, same to the ones in the convertible.

The exterior of the sedan has also been changed. The inexpressive turn indicator was replaced by a larger one and installed closer to the headlights.

After the end of production in Europe in 1975, cars release continued in Argentina until 1981. Before 1989, Peugeot 404 was assembled at the factory in the city of Mombasa, Kenya. In addition, the production has been established in Belgium, Ireland, Nigeria, Peru, Malaysia, Chile. In Africa, the Peugeot 404 pickup truck proved to be the most popular.
