Production of this middle class model began in 1965. From 1969 to 1971 the car had been a leader in a number of sales on the French market of passenger cars. Peugeot 204 production was stopped in 1976.

Peugeot 204 cars were produced in such body types as a sedan, five-door wagon, van, coupe and convertible. Wagon rear seats were equipped with folding backrests, enabling to expand the luggage space significantly.

The car featured technical equipment which was advanced for its time: the independent suspension, front disc brakes, transverse location of the power unit and front wheel drive.

Due to original design solutions, Peugeot 204 saloon was spacious enough even in comparison to larger cars. A gearbox arm was located on a steering column. As an option, a customer could order a sliding sunroof.

Peugeot Company entrusted the development of car design to Pininfarina Studio. In 1966, the British Autocar magazine held a number of tests of Peugeot 204, and according to the results, its steerability, efficiency and brake system reliability were appraised extremely high.

The car had an excellent acceleration dynamics, so it was often used in motor racing. In 1967 the model brought the gold to its team at once, also a silver and a bronze medal during the 1000 Tanganyika rally and helped to win the first six places in the East African Safari.

Manufacturer stopped the production of the model in 1976. In total more than 1.6 million Peugeot 204 cars of all modifications were produced.
