At the same time, the new car took from the predecessor quite a lot. The Italian automobile designer Giorgetto Giugiaro was engaged in the development of the exterior style. The model had an exterior, traditional for a car of that time, with rectangular head lights, a large radiator grill, and also a big bumper that was slightly protruding.
Developers produced model in the sedan, 3-and a 5-door hatchback body types. Besides, they provided 4 modifications of the car: basic, two improved and one - the most expensive. In the different markets they had different alphabetic indexes.
In the first year the car got to the "The best product" rating from the Fortune magazine.

Hyundai Excel X2 restylingsThe Hyundai Excel model was changed slightly in 1991. Developers enlarged head lights and united them with marker lights so the radiator grill was narrowed a little.
Also engineers continued to improve engines and established the improved MacPherson suspension. Special attention was paid to the safety of passengers and the driver. Developers changed an arrangement of seat belts to reduce a blow impulse at accidents.
Hyundai Excel X3In 1994 developers released a new generation of the Hyundai Excel X3 model. Designers elaborated the car exterior completely. All acute angles became smoother, tear-shaped head lights and the rounded bumpers were set on the car. Developers displaced a radiator grill lower and made it smaller.
The car was produced in the sedan, 3- 5-door hatchback and coupe body types.
The third generation of the model received special popularity in Australia. In 1996 and 1998 the car entered TOP-3 of the most sold cars in the country. Till 2000 the model became the most successful import vehicle in Australia. The release of the model ended in 2000.

The new model received the name Mitsubishi Precis. The name "Precis" was selected by the companies in cooperation. It means "the best in the price".
