The Renault Thalia sedan has been designed especially for the countries in which cars in such body type enjoy much bigger popularity, than hatchbacks had, therefore the model has not gained distribution in Western Europe. Assembling of these cars was carried out in Turkey, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Slovenia and Argentina. The Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, North Africa and Gulf States were key sales markets of this model. Production lasted from 1999 to 2013.

The car was designed on the basis of the second generation of Renault Clio and differed from this model only in existence of a luggage compartment so the rear part of the car seemed unrelated to the body. Production has been initially arranged in Turkey that has allowed to reduce the cost of the car considerably. The first generation was released from 1999 to 2008.

In March, 2002 (in South America — in 2003) restyling of the model took place - the front bumper of the car got black mouldings. The interior changed slightly: the steering wheel has changed, and window regulator buttons were moved from the central bar to a driver's door. At the beginning of 2005 Renault Thalia cars were changed slightly - back optics, direction indicators repeaters and the radiator grille were modernized. Some analogous devices were replaced by digital ones.

At the beginning of 2006 in Argentina and Brazil, and in the autumn in Europe there were updated Renault Thalia: bumpers did not have mouldings and began to be painted in a body colour, the radiator grille was changed again, and Renault logo plate was placed on the handle of baggage compartment.

The presentation of the second generation of Renault Thalia took place in August, 2008 at the International motor show in Moscow. New cars were 7 cm longer than the predecessors and had spacious luggage carrier. At designing of the body designers have refused copying of Renault Clio design. Renault Thalia cars of the second generation have been presented at the market in three complete sets: Authentique, Expression and Privilège. As for safety, new Renault Thalia was equipped with airbags of the driver and passenger, and also (as an additional option) side pillows, an anti-block brake system, electronic brake force distribution and safety belts regulated on height.

Soon after releasing, the second generation of the model has been recognized as the car of year-2009 by results of vote of jury of the Autobest competition from 15 countries of Eastern and Central Europe.

As Renault Thalia model was known only in the European countries, in Turkey cars gained distribution under the name of Clio Symbol, in Brazil and Paraguay — Clio Sedan, in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile — Clio 4 Puertas, in other countries of South America — Symbol, at last, in Asia and North Africa the model was on sale under the name Clio Classic.
