Production of this model began in 2001 in Romorantin-Lanthenay, France, and came to the end two years later, in 2003.

The concept of Renault Avantime was presented in 1999 at the showroom in Geneva. The translation of the name of this model ("ahead of its time") as well as possible reflects the result of cooperation of the Renault concern and the Matra company, that also produced the aerospace equipment. The model became the last within their co-production.

The serial version of the car was submitted the same year at the showroom in Frankfurt, nevertheless, production of this model began only in 2001. The car was produced at the plant of the Matra company. This minivan was designed on the basis of Renault Espace.

Since the presented concept in the car practically nothing has changed. The futuristic design of an exterior was designed by the chief designer of the concern — Patrick Le Quément.

Renault Avantime cars differ in the big glazing area. Some hatches are set on the roof and front and side triangular windows racks are hardly noticeable. B-pillar is absent at all.

Model interior is also quite unusual. All buttons are settled down on the left side of the wheel and the instrument information is highlighted on the display in the center of the dashboard.

Distinctive feature of the car is the increased safety level which is provided with system of electronic stabilization of the movement, six airbags and a powerful body skeleton besides system of emergency braking. It is worth to allocate the adjustable air supply in airbags and seat belts which adapt for weight, growth of the passenger and force of blow.

In 2011 200 owners of Renault Avantime gathered on the autodrome of Monteria in Linas, France, where they celebrated together with founders of a model concept the 10th anniversary of the beginning of a mass production.
