Renault 8Till 2014 when the release of Renault Twingo III took place, Renault 8 was considered to be the last rear steer car of the French producer. Renault 8 sedan was produced from 1962 to 1973. Assembling was carried out at plants in France, and also in Spain, Bulgaria, Romania, Venezuela, Mexico, Australia, Morocco, Canada and Algeria. In 1963 Renault 8 has been recognized as the car of year in Australia according to the Wheels Magazine.
History of creation Renault 8The design of a Renault 8 body is in many respects similar to the prototype of Alfa Romeo 103, presented in 1960, as these automobile companies had business relationship in the 1950-60th, and such models as Renault Dauphine and Renault 4 were assembled at Alfa Romeo plants for the Italian market under license.
Release of the model begun in June, 1962. Renault 8 was based on the Renault Dauphine platform with which it have shared the basic design and wheel base, and was one of the first French cars with disk brakes set at all the wheels (at the end of production of model they have been replaced with drum brakes).
In 1964 there was more powerful modification of the model - Renault 8 Major, and after it — even more powerful Renault 8 R1134 Gordini, called so in honour of the famous producer of sports engines. This car had the unique style: a bright blue body with two white strips along the full length, big 200-millimetric headlights. Renault 8 Gordini became the real icon in the world of sports cars. The following Renault 12 Gordini model was on sale without much success. In 1964 also all the representatives of the Renault 8 model have received the new dashboard and a glove box.
In 1968 Renault 8 S was released— one more sports version more reasonable than Renault 8 Gordini. In France its release has stopped in 1971, and in Spain continued till 1976.
Renault 8 in the markets of the different countriesFrom 1966 to 1970 Renault 8 cars were released in Bulgaria under the name of Bulgarrenault. In Romania this model was made under the name of Dacia 1100 under license.
