Production of the Renault 5 model as the city car proceeded during the period from 1972 to 1996. More than 5,5 million cars were released in total. As a result, the design of this model was copied by other car makers and for many years became a standard for the production of hatchbacks.

Information about the concept of Renault 5 was published by the company on December 10, 1971, and next year the serial model went on sale in a body of a three-door hatchback. The car for the whole decade became the bestseller in France, and then in Europe. In 1980 the model with a five-door body was presented to public.

The original form of a body positively affected aerodynamics of the car. The drag coefficient of Renault 5 was nearly 20% lower, than the majority of models of other car makers of that time had.

The car was one of the first in the world that received plastic bumpers instead of the traditional metal ones. In case of collision impact energy was transferred immediately to the reinforced body. The car received the torsion suspension from the predecessor — Renault 4.

Renault 5 with the turbocharged engine was successfully used in professional motorsport. The car brought the first place on rally of Monte-Carlo 1977 and 1981. The model won more than forty various international competitions.

In 1984 the company presented the second generation of the model on the basis of the Renault 9/11 platform. The producer of Renault 5 managed to improve aerodynamic characteristics and to cut fuel consumption. The car received perfect suspension of McPherson type.

Some modifications possessed leather finishing, the hydraulic power steering and window electric regulators in a basic complete set. The conditioner was offered as an additional option.

Since 1990 the company stops release of the model gradually. Production of Renault 5 Supercinq proceeded in Slovenia till 1996.

In 1987 the modification of Renault 5 GT Turbo received new wheel arches, and the updated front and rear bumper. The producer equipped the car with new system of ignition and water cooling.

In 1976 sales of Renault 5 began in the USA and Canada where the car was known under the name Renault Le Car. In Iran the car was made till 2002 under the name of Sepand.
