There is no necessity to remove the mirror casing for replacement of the rear view mirror glass on VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) car. It is sufficient to move it aside from the car body as far as possible, so as to provide maximally comfortable access to the part to be replaced. Sometimes it is more comfortable to perform works from the driver’s or passenger seat, having slightly opened the door and lowered the glass.
During cold season, perform replacement of the rear view mirror glass in well-heated room, as strength of plastic worsens under the influence of low temperature.
Before starting demounting the component on the VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) car, heat up the casing of the component and the mirror element itself, using a heat gun. Thanks to this, plastic will become more elastic, and risk to damage the retainers will be reduced.
In order to gain access to the retainers, you need to move the mirror element aside, by pressing onto one of its corners. Put a suitable tool through appeared opening and release the retainers one after another in a circle.
Use only plastic wedge for releasing the retainers. It is prohibited to use a flat screwdriver (as many do), in order not to scratch the mirror casing and the surface of the mirror element.
Before installing a new part you need to clean the mounting seat from moisture and contaminants, then plug in the connectors, align the retainers, and press onto the mirror element until it clicks into place, by applying a sufficiently great effort.
