Before replacing a rear light assembly on the VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) vehicle, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery: any manipulations associated with electricity require utmost caution.
Remove everything unnecessary from the trunk in order not to impede access to the fasteners of the rear light cluster.

Turn ignition on, then press the brake pedal. Check if brake lights are activated.
Turn on ignition, engage the parking brake of the VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) vehicle, and engage reverse gear. Check if reverse lights are activated.
