Jump starter

Jump starters are used to start the engine when the battery is discharged. They are connected to the battery terminals using alligator clips and charge the battery.

Operating principle

The devices are fitted with lithium polymer or lithium iron phosphate dry-charge storage batteries powered from a household power outlet or the onboard electrical system. Their housings may contain one to six sections connected in series or parallel-series. The device is controlled by an appropriate electronic unit. Two operating modes are provided: partial or complete battery recharging.

Types of jump starters available on the market

By purpose:

1. Battery boosters. Multifunctional, portable. These devices need an internal rechargeable battery. They discharge quickly at subzero temperatures.
2. Transformer boosters. They transform the voltage to 12V/24V. They start the motor and may be used as a welding machine. They are large and are powered from the mains.
3. Capacitor boosters. They are exclusively used to start the engine. They are compact and charge quickly, but are also expensive and not serviceable. They operate on the basis of built-in high-capacity electric capacitors.
4. Pulse boosters. These boosters are fitted with built-in high-frequency inverters. They are small and their price is affordable. They require a connection to the mains.

By power output:

• 6 V - for two-wheeled motor vehicles;
• 12 V - for passenger cars;
• 24 V - for larger vehicles.

Furthermore, the devices differ in the capacity of the built-in battery, amperage, and additional functions available: a USB connector for charging gadgets, a flashlight, etc.

Recommendations for using jump starters

1. To avoid a short circuit, make sure the connections of the device’s contacts to the terminals are reliable.
2. Do not exceed 10 seconds for each attempt to start the engine.
3. Do not use the device instead of the battery.
4. Do not use corroded or otherwise damaged equipment.
5. Keep liquids from getting inside the device.
