Tool chest: what you need to know

Tool trolleys are movable metal cabinets meant for the storage and transportation of tools. Equipped with heavy-duty swivel casters that allow to move the equipment between working areas. They give an opportunity to properly organise the workspace and keep everything in order.

Types of tool trolleys

By design:

• Shelf trolleys. Framed items fitted with several open shelves. Used mainly for storing large items and small car parts, for example, steering rods, alternators, starters, brake discs.
• Tool chest. Closed-type products fitted with drawers of different sizes. The number of compartments varies depending on the model: there can be either 8 or 15 of them. These products are often equipped with door closers, locks, foam tool organizers. The advantage of closed-type tool trolleys is the top, which can be used as a work table.
• Trolleys with shelves and drawers. Universal models equipped with both open and closed compartments.

There are some other distinguishing features:

• Wall thickness. The most widely spread items with the wall thickness between 0.8 and 1.2 mm. The higher this parameter, the more reliable and durable the design.
• Load capacity. It depends on the number and size of drawers and shelves. For example, small compartments usually withstand about 15 kg and large ones are suitable for around 30 kilos. The maximum loading capacity of the top shelf can reach 40 kilos.
• The type of drawer guides. Generally, roller guides or telescopic systems with ball bearings are used.
• Locking casters. They allow to hold the tool chest casters fixed and keep it steady on any kind of surfaces.
• List of equipment. In the catalogues, there are items equipped with side hooks, magnetic holders, special rubber mats, perforated walls for placing tools which are often used, etc.

Tips on using tool trolleys

Read the manufacturer’s manual before you use the trolley and do not overload it. If necessary, clean it with a soft damp cloth. Do not use any solvents and abrasive detergents. It’s undesirable to store toolboxes in high humidity conditions. It is also necessary to lubricate the drawer guides occasionally.
