Auto grease guns: what you need to know

Grease guns are used for maintenance of bearings, oil seals, universal joint crosses, leaf springs and other movable elements. It provides supply of oil under pressure. It contributes to economy of the grease and provides its even distribution.

What are the types of grease guns

Depending on the operation principle, there are:

• Manual. They are activated by pressing the trigger or lever. They differ by the design and, accordingly, by the operating characteristics. For example, in plunger pumps for greasing, which work on the principle of backward pressure, lubricant is pressed out due to work of the spring mechanism. The pressure created in their working chamber is high, that is why such devices are suitable for high viscosity lubricants and retain their operability at low temperature. There are also tools without an actuating mechanism – one-hand operated grease guns. They cost inexpensively but their efficiency is lower. Quantity of pressed out lubricant is directly proportional to intensity of the effort made.
• Pneumatic. They have a compressor in their structure, and lubricant is supplied with the help of the pressed air. They are connected to the electric mains. They can work from the battery. They are notable for high efficiency and responsiveness, but are more expensive in comparison with other types of these devices.

As a rule, lubricating tools have a durable aluminium or steel housing. You can also find products with a reinforced housing in the assortment of different companies. Also there are devices without housing. They are designed for use of the products supplied in factory cartridges.

Tips on grease guns use

1. Study the manual of the grease gun and precisely follow recommendations specified there.
2. Before starting works, make sure that the device is serviceable.
3. Follow safety rules. Take care of eyes and skin protection. Don’t use the device near fire sources.
4. Prepare a clean soft cloth for removing the grease from the grease gun surface: its housing is easy to get dirty during refilling, especially when using non-packaged materials.
5. If there is no air valve in the device, then don’t hurry to fully tighten the cap on the housing after refilling. Press the handle several times in order to let extra air out, and only after this perform final tightening.
6. Clean the tool after completing the work. Only lint-free cloth should be used for removing the grease residues.
7. Take care that the room where the lubricant gun is stored is clean and dry, and air temperature is not lower than +5 °C.
