Cordless drills / screw guns: what you need to know

Drills and screw guns are tools which have found wide application in car repair. The first ones are used for boring holes and, less often, for grinding a car or polishing lights; others allow perform installation or dismantling of threaded fasteners quickly and easily.

What are the types of drills and screw guns?

By the type of power supply:

• Mains-powered. They are connected to electricity. As a rule, they are characterised by increased power.
• Battery-powered. They allow to work far from power supplies as they need charging from time to time. These are usually less powerful than mains-powered ones.

Depending on the type of the drive:

• Pistol-grip. They look like screwdrivers and are lightweight and compact. They are used for vertical drilling.

By the level of working characteristics:

• Professional. They are characterized by long service life, withstand high loads, quickly charged.
• Household. They are characterised by a lightweight and affordable price. Rotational power and speed of the shaft are lower than in professional tools. It will take you several hours to charge a battery.

Operating principle

Drills and screw guns have similar designs. In electric tools, a motor creates rotational motion. The force is transmitted by a planetary gear to the shaft of the tool which is called a spindle. The latter is rigidly connected to the chuck which holds drill or any other working bits. Pneumatic tools are fitted, instead of a motor, with an impeller with blades driven by compressed air.

Tips on using drills and screw guns

Before you start, make sure that the drill bit or holder are securely fixed. When working with a drill, use only sharp drill bits in order not to damage the surface. Switch to reverse only after the drill bit or head have completely stopped.

Observe the safety precautions. For example, in order to prevent the tool from being stuck, it isn’t allowed to press against it too hard. Before you change a bit, you should cut the device off the power supply and make sure that it doesn’t rotate any more. You should also prevent the contact between foreign objects and the rotating elements. It is strongly recommended not to let a drill or screw gun go off your hands while they are working and during some time after you switch them off until the electric motor is completely still. When being used, some part of the tools become very hot, so you should be careful not to burn yourself. Don’t forget to wear protective goggles, especially, while drilling.
