The release of Volvo 164 sedans continued in 1968-1975. During that time a single generation of the car was presented. Volvo 164 cars were manufactured on the plants in Torslanda and Kalmar, Sweden.

Volvo 164 debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 1968. The model started being sold the following year. Development of the vehicle was led by the chief designer of the company Jan Wilsgaard. The Volvo 164 sedan was built on the elongated platform of Volvo 144. Volvo 164 received a longer wheelbase, a six-cylinder engine, an extensive package and a new design.

The car’s exterior stood out for its angularity and abundance of chrome elements. The moldings surrounding the wheel arches and the doorsills were also chrome, as well as ones on the beltline. All windows had chrome frames. The front of the car was decorated with a large radiator grille with vertical ribs and brand logo, round headlights, a power bulge on the hood and a curved bumper. After the 1973 facelift Volvo 164 sedans received new front bumpers and tail lights, as well as a different radiator grille. The dashboard and steering wheel were renewed. Also the manufacturers reinforced the construction of the body.

All Volvo 164 vehicles had a high level of safety and environmental friendliness. This model became the first car with an emission control system installed in it. Volvo 164 was being released till 1975. It was later replaced by Volvo 264.
