Production of the sports car Porsche 912 was carried out during the period from 1965 to 1969 at the plant in Stuttgart, Germany. In total, more than 30 thousand cars were released.

History of Porsche 912 creation

The prototype of Porsche 912 was created in 1964, and within a year the car went on sale. The car was developed on the basis of Porsche 911, but differed in more modest dynamic characteristics and reasonable price. The car inherited the reliable power unit from the Porsche 356 model. The car was produced in a coupe and targa bodies.

The design of the exterior of Porsche 912 completely repeated the Porsche 911 model. In the front part of the body, the bonnet lid sloped down toward the bumper in between bug-eye headlights. The sloping rear part of the body smoothly transitioned into the rear bumper.

The air-cooled engine was located at the rear end. The car had rear wheel drive. Because of the smaller weight of the power unit,  the model had better weight distribution on axles in comparison with Porsche 911.

Porsche 912 cars were not designed for motorsport, which did not stop their use successfully at different competitions of the international level. On European Rally Championship of 1967, Porsche 912 brought victory to the racer Sobieslaw Zasada.

The car was in great demand, and in many countries of Europe was also used as rapid police transport. Production of Porsche 912 continued until the end of 1969, when the company started release of a new model — Porsche 914.

In 1976 Porsche 912 was produced as a temporary replacement for Porsche 914 in the market of the USA for the short time. The car was called  Porsche 912E 923. In total, about 2100 cars were released.
