Opel Senator
Opel Senator is a sedan of executive class produced from 1978 to 1993. The model initially was intended for the European market, but after success of the car the geography of its sales was considerably extended. The car was manufactured at the plant in Russelsheim, Germany.
Opel Senator A
Opel Senator A actually was the extended and improved Opel Rekord E version. Developers initially made this car of a higher class. Along with a sedan the coupe with the Opel Monza name was created. Further cars were developed separately.
For the first time Opel Senator A1 was presented at the Frankfurt auto show in 1977. Production of stock cars began in several months. The main difference of new model from the predecessor were six side windows. Also the front part of a body was changed.
Cars of the first generation differed in good grip on the road, comfortable passenger compartment and powerful engines.
Opel Senator A restylings
In 1981 the company decided to give Opel Senator A1 a slight facelift, during which side mirrors were changed, quality of plastic for the dashboard was improved.
In November, 1982, developers presented the updated Opel Senator A2 model. Changes of an exterior were not too considerable: designers increased the size of head lights and changed colour of the radiator grille to opaque black. Passenger compartment underwent the main changes and became more ergonomic.
The concern did not use the chrome plated inserts in interior design any more, using matte black inserts only.
Technical characteristics of the car were considerably improved after modernization of a line of engines with direct fuel injection.
Opel Senator B
The second generation of Opel Senator B cars was presented in 1987. It was based on the improved V-body platform and had the extended wheel base. The exterior was similar to Opel Omega, with a modified rear part.
Developers paid special attention to comfort of the driver and passengers. The CD package had the improved shock-absorbers, the air conditioner, heating of seats, a cruise control system and the on-board computer.
Release of the model was stopped in 1993 before the launching of the second generation of Opel Omega.
Opel Senator in the market of the different countries
The Opel Senator model was imported to Great Britain under the name Vauxhall Royale because the Opel brand was less known. Nevertheless, a certain number of cars were imported also under the original name.
The model was available in South Africa under the name of Chevrolet Senator, but in 1982 it got rebadged as Opel Senator.
