Opel Rekord
Opel Rekord was produced from 1953 to 1986. It was a business class car though the first two generations were positioned as middle class. In total, seven generations of the model and one restyling were released.
Model 1957–1971
The first Opel Rekord car was produced in 1953 and was the modernized variant of Opel Olympia Rekord. Being an standalone model, the car carried the Olympia prefix till 1957. From 1953 to 1971 six generations of Opel Rekord were released.
The design of the car of the first generation was developed in the American style and was characterized by abundance of the chrome elements and a bright decor. Opel Rekord P1 of the second generation was produced since 1957 and had wrap around front: for German cars it was a novelty. In design of the dashboard the soft upholstery was used. Since 1960 the design of Opel Rekord P2 was distanced from the American models. The flat roof and horizontal lines visually extended a body.
The fifth generation of Opel Rekord A, produced since 1963, had the singular radiator grille with large cells. In Opel Rekord B models, produced since 1965, round front headlights were replaced by rectangular ones. Opel Rekord C of 1967 differed in the front optics which was visually connected to a radiator grille.
Initially producers offered a two-door sedan and a three-door station wagon for sale. Then a four-door sedan, a five-door station wagon, the pickup and a coupe were added to this list. By request the Autenrieth company produced coupes and cabriolets for some time.
Technological equipment of Opel Rekord cars was progressive for those times. Disc brakes, electric screen wipers, brake-power assist units were installed.
Model D
Release of the seventh generation of Opel Rekord was carried out from 1972 to 1977. The model received an index D though it was advertized as Opel Rekord II.
This model differed from the predecessor in the narrower nose, curved radiator grille, a new bumper and the chrome mouldings on each side. The car began to look more refined and elegant. Car dimensions were increased. Coupes, sedans and station wagons were offered on sale.
Model E
The debut of the last generation took place in 1977. The design of the nose of a car was changed: the shortened bonnet lid, the updated bumper and radiator grille, the enlarged front headlights — all this features gave modern look to the car.
Reasonable price, quite good level of comfort and high-quality technical characteristics made Opel Rekord E the best seller in Europe and outside it. Release of the eighth generation was carried out till 1986.
Model E restyling
In 1982 there was a restyling of Opel Rekord E. The shape of radiator grille, front headlights, bumpers and a bonnet were changed. Sedan and station wagon only were available bodies. In the updated models new options appeared. The most expensive package included the hydraulic power steering, the on-board computer, power windows and the central lock.
Opel Rekord in the markets of the different countries
Opel Rekord was on sale not only in Europe, but also outside it. In South Korea the car was released under the name of Daewoo Royale, in the Republic of South Africa - under the name of Chevrolet, in the USA — Opel Buick Rekord. In Belgium Opel Rekord D and C were offered on sale as Opel Ranger.
