Opel Ascona
Opel Ascona was produced since 1970 to 1988. These cars were created as Ford competitors in the middle class. In 1982 the sport Opel Ascona 400 model being driven by Walter Röhrl has won the first place in WRC World Cup. Assembling of cars of the first generation was carried out in Bochum, Germany. At the plants of the company in Belgium and Great Britain Opel Ascona of the second and third generations were assembled.
Model A
Release of Opel Ascona of the first generation was carried out in 1970-1975. The car debuted in autumn of 1970 in Russelsheim. Initially the model was produced in a sedan and a station wagon bodies style. Sports modification of Opel Ascona 1,9 SR brought the first prize to Walter Röhrl in the European championship rally in 1974.
Model B
In 1975 at the Frankfurt motor show the second generation of Opel Ascona was presented. The design of the car was changed slightly: producers replaced round headlights with square ones, updated the radiator grille and a front bumper. Laminated glass and electric window wipers were offered as additional options. A coupe was added to the line of bodies, but release of station wagons was stopped.
Since 1979 the updated plastic bumpers were installed on the cars and the radiator grille was painted in gray colour. Release of cars of this generation continued till 1981.
In 1979 Opel Ascona 400, a rally model was produced and it brought to this model the world popularity afterwards. The design of the car was developed by Irmscher firm. The car had big doors, the light-weight hood, trunk lid and fenders. This car repeatedly won world rallies:
- in 1980 and 1982 Opel Ascona 400 secured a victory to Walter Röhrl on Monte-Carlo rally;
- in 1982 Walter Röhrl won a world champion title on rally driving this car; same year he won Africa rally;
- in 1983 Ari Vatanen driving this car won Safari rally in the Rothmans International team.
Model C
The debut of the third generation of Opel Ascona took place in 1981. Technical characteristics of new models were considerably improved, and the passenger compartment, thanks to a transverse arrangement of the engine, became much more spacious. Already by the end of 1981 this model was the best sold in Germany.
In a line of bodies there was a five-door hatchback, a station wagon was released for Great Britain only. The list of options included heating of side mirrors, the central lock, the hydraulic power steering and the on-board computer.
In 1988 production of Opel Ascona C was stopped.
Model C restylings
In 1984 the first restyling of Opel Ascona C took place. Changes concerned design of a radiator grille, headlights and wheel decorative caps. The dashboard was improved; the possibility of seats adjustment appeared. After the second restyling of 1986, Opel Ascona had a light front optics and the darkened back one, a front spoiler and air inlets painted in a body colour.
