Kia RetonaKia Retona mini SUV production started in 1998 and came to the end in 2002. In this period, company presented 1 generation and 1 facelift of cars. Car manufacturing took place in Kwangju, South Korea. Lada Niva, Suzuki Jimny and SsangYong Korando were main competitive models of Kia Retona, which firstly was named as Asia Retona.
First Kia Retona generationKia Retona is a civil version of military crossover K-131. New car was built on platform of Kia Sportage in 1998. Due to its driving performance and compact sizes, it was ideal for both for city driving and off-road. 4-wheel drive turning on helped to improve driving performance and increase productivity. Special lever was mounted in passenger compartment for this purpose. Car sizes were 4000 mm length, 1835 mm height, 1745 mm wide.
Kia Retona exterior was classic for mini SUV: projected massive bumper, large round headlights, wide radiator grill, and air intake on hood. Despite its sizes car was small because there were many plastic exterior details.
Kia Retona interior was characterized by simplicity and comfort. Rear seats were comfortable for passengers – there was much space for legs and above heads. As for driver, he also felt comfortable: large steering wheel, ergonomic seat and informative control panel with big faces of speedometer, tachometer and fuel tank gauge.
Kia Retona Cruiser I generation faceliftFirst generation of the model underwent restyling in 2000. Cars got new name - Kia Retona Cruiser. Exterior had significant changes. New radiator grill became more massive and heavy. Fog lights were mounted into the front bumper. Rear stoplights with three signal square lights were also mounted.
Kia Retona interior was also improved. Dashboard changed: large brow appeared above gauges and indicators became bigger and well-readable. Buttons and air vents were changed also. A niche for personal things appeared in front of passenger.
Model production was finished in 2002.
