Ford SierraThe Ford Sierra model was produced from 1982 to 1993. Two generations of this car and one restyling were presented. Assembling of the cars was carried out at plants of Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, South Africa, New Zealand and Venezuela. In 1983 the car took the second place at the "European Car of Year" competition and was inferior to the Audi 100 model of the third generation. The low price, a wide choice of bodies, modifications and options — all this brought popularity and recognition to Ford Sierra cars both in Europe and beyond its borders.
Ford Sierra I generationRelease of Ford Sierra of the first generation was carried out in 1982-1986. The debut of the mode,l constructed on the basis of the Ford Proube III concept car, took place at the Parisian motor show and made stunning success. Thanks to aerodynamic body style the drag coefficient was quite low for those times and made 0,34 (the champion of those years - Audi 100 on the C3 platform – had this indicator equal to 0,30).
The design of the car with distinctive smooth lines was revolutionary and ultrafashionable for those times. In the beginning, the car was released in a five-door hatchback and the station wagon bodies, the three-door hatchback was added one year later. At buyers requirements several modifications, among which powerful Sierra RS Cosworth enjoyed special popularity, were offered: some European automobile studio increased the power of this car to 500 h.p.
Ford Sierra II generationModels of the second generation debuted in 1987. Producers improved technical characteristics of the car, modernized a range of power units, changed the exterior and interior design.
Fords Sierra of this generation differed in the shortened cowl and a massive radiator grille which was very narrow in models of the first generation. Front headlights were increased in sizes. A sedan and the pickup were added to the number of available bodies. Also there were new complete sets.
Ford Sierra II generation restylingsIn 1990 there was a restyling of Ford Sierra of the second generation. Cars got the darkened back lights and direction indicators made of transparent plastic. In a radiator grille cuts for an air intake appeared. Also there were mouldings on doors. The change of the compartment concerned the dashboard, a steering tube and internal door handles. After restyling, the updated door locks were set in the Ford Sierra models.
In 1991 some more changes were made - in all complete sets the hydraulic power steering and power window appeared, also bumpers began to be painted in a body color. At the beginning of 1993 it was decided to stop the production of Ford Sierra cars.
Ford Sierra in the markets of the different countriesIn the American market sport modification of the Ford Sierra XR4i model is better known under the Merkur XR4Ti name. Merkur cars were produced at the plant in Germany.
