Fiat 600 is the rear-wheel drive city car released by the Italian car maker in 1955-1969. It is recognized as a symbol of economic recovery of the country. Fiat 600 cars were produced in a number of the countries of Latin America, and also in Germany and Spain besides Italy.

In 1951 the management of Fiat thought of release of more comfortable model to replace old-fashionedTopolino model. Post-war Italy needed extremely simple and inexpensive vehicle. The new minicar in a body of a two-door sedan was presented 4 years later in Geneva.

The design of the car was extremely rational, at the same time drawing attention with unusual features: a streamline body and the roof, falling over. The car weights only 600 kg and housed four passengers, had an independent suspension, qualitative system of ventilation and heating, and the reasonable price thanks to which Fiat 600 became at once popular at first in Italy, and then in Europe.

One year later the Fiat 600 family was replenished with the four-door passenger-and-freight car of carriage configuration Fiat Multipla which is considered to be the ancestor of the modern minivans . Six-seater Multipla at once won sympathies of the Italian taxi drivers.

In 1958 production of Fiat 600 Jolly was organized, it was the beach version of the model with a tent instead of a roof and without doors. This version found application both in the Italian and the Californian resorts.

The second generation of Fiat 600 was released in 1960 and got 600D index. The modernized cars got the new engine increasing their maximal speed up to 110 km/h. A bit later Fiat 600D got the new optics and more capacious fuel tanks.

In spite of the fact that it was difficult to call Fiat 600 a sporty car, the Abarth firm created a number of modifications for participation in rally on the platform of this model. As a result in 1962-1967 all prizes of the European championship in the class were taken away by the Italian team acting on small and lightweight Fiat 600 Abarth cars.

Huge popularity of Fiat 600 led to the fact that the Italian plants did not cope any more with such demand therefore production was arranged in some other countries. So, in Spain this model was produced as Seat 600, in Germany — as Neckar Jagst 600, and in Yugoslavia — Zastava 750. In spite of the fact that production Fiat 600 and Multipla in Italy finished in 1969, in Spain cars were produced till 1973, and in Yugoslavia — till the 1985th.
