This car was produced by the Fiat company from 1966 to 1974. The model presented initially only in a sedan body replaced outdated Fiats 1300 and Fiat 1500. Later a station wagon, a coupe and a cabriolet bodies were available. Under the license the model was produced at plants of the USSR, India, Spain, Bulgaria, Turkey, Korea. Fiat 124 was recognized as the best European car in 1967.

Fiat 124 cars became one of the most widespread in the world, more than 15 million copies were sold out. Initially the model was planned to have the front wheel drive, however the company management took into account unsuccessful attempts of other manufacturers to release such cars under the conditions of an economic crisis of the 1960s, therefore the traditional design with the rear wheel drive was kept.

The design of the new car was modern, angular, however the public which was not yet tired of vehicles’ rounded shapes after the first demonstrations of a prototype evaluated appearance of Fiat 124 as extremely unattractive. In spite of this fact, at the beginning of 1966 Fiat started the stock production of Fiat 124 sedan officially presented at the motor show in Paris. In half a year the station wagon was released, and consumers at once fell in love with the car for its spacious passenger compartment, lightness of a framework, the updated rear spring suspension and disk brakes on each wheel.

As far as Fiat 124 was concerned, the company management did not make far-reaching plans, however thanks to low cost of price and high technological effectiveness of the model, many countries got the license for its production. As a result, updated Fiat 124 versions acquired great popularity and a long-term demand, the global car makers didn’t stop the production lines of this model for 40 more years.

In 1967 the Fiat 124 family was topped off with an expensive Coupe and a Sport Spider convertible that were released by limited editions. However the first Fiat 124 convertible had actually appeared in the previous year: at the motor show in Turin the Carrozzeria Touring body studio presented Fiat 124 C4. The prototype collected about one thousand requests from potential buyers, but the stock production of the convertible did not take place: because of fierce competition Carrozzeria Touring soon went out of business, and Fiat 124 C4 remained in a single copy.

In 1974 the production of the Fiat 124 model in Italy was stopped while in other countries the cars were produced till 1990s. At the end of 2015 at the motor show in Los Angeles a triumphal return of Fiat 124 Spider took place: the updated two-seater convertible appeared 50 years later the release of the legendary predecessor.
