Production of this roadster began in 2000. In three years 5 703 cars were sold. Initially BMW planned to release only the concept that was the stylization of 507 model under the modern cars, but the novelty received a set of positive comments. The roadster was laid off in 2003. Cars were produced in Munich, Germany.

In 1997 and 1998 Z07 concept was presented at the Tokyo and Detroit showrooms respectively. As the project of the new car interested all the motorists around the world, the management of the BMW company made the decision to release a limited series of a roadster.

BMW Z8 cars is the advanced 507 model which was released from 1956 to 1959. The founder of BMW 507, the count Albrecht Goerz, declared that a new roadster has more effective design in comparison with the predecessor. Smooth lines of a body, roundish head lights and the rounded-off radiator grill made BMW Z8 one of the most stylish sport cars.

The air conditioner, navigation system, system of dynamic stabilization (DSC III), four airbags and the high-quality audio system were included in a basic set. Additional options for this car weren't provided.

The bright roadster was involved in several movies with popular actors. Among owners of this car there were Pierce Brosnan's heroes ("James Bond 007: The world is not enough") and Jackie Chan ("The tuxedo").

In the middle of 2002 the Alpina company released the improved Roadster V8 on the basis of BMW Z8. To make the model attractive to the markets of Japan and the USA, new version was equipped with an automatic transmission of a gear shift and the engine with the increased torque. For a year of production in the Japanese and European market 105 cars were sold. In the American market 450 cars were sold.
