If there is a need to replace wheel fasteners on a FIAT PUNTO (188) vehicle not due to their damage, but, for example, for installation of spacers or alloy rims instead of standard stamped ones, the components should always be replaced in a set. This may be explained by the fact that fastening the rims installed for the purposes of tuning usually requires longer bolts of a configuration different from that of the standard ones.
When the fasteners are replaced in a set, unscrew lug bolts or nuts one by one, and immediately replace the removed component with a new one. This will remove the need to center the wheel.
To remove old rusty fasteners, use special products to dissolve the rust, a wrench with a long handle, or a special extension. An attempt to unscrew the fasteners with excessive force may damage thread in the wheel rim.
Clean the mounting seat from dirt and apply small amount of copper-based lubricant to the thread: it prevents premature wear and corrosion of the fasteners.
Tighten the lug nuts and bolts with the torque specified by the manufacturer. The relevant tightening torque for FIAT PUNTO (188) vehicles is indicated in technical documentation to the vehicle. Observing the specified torque is highly important: if the fastener is over-tightened or under-tightened, the wheel may detach from the hub while driving.
