Installation of the timing belt and water pump kit should be entrusted to professionals. Special equipment and skills are necessary during works performing: improper installation of removed components is fraught with breakdown of the valves and expensive repair of the engine.
In order to gain access to the timing belt and water pump, you need to demount the accessories, following the VW PASSAT Variant (3B6) car service manual.
When replacing the timing belt and water pump, it is advisable to install also a new accessory poly-V belt. These parts have almost the same lifetime limit. Replacing them both, you will save money on cost of works.
Before installing new components, it is important to correctly synchronize the crankshaft and camshaft. Errors during synchronization may lead to damaging of the valves.
It is advisable to slightly raise the engine during works performing; this will reduce load to the front mount.
The hydraulic damper locking pin should be removed only when the belt and roller have been installed. Otherwise the tensioner will be set in an incorrect position.

Lift the car using a jack and rotate the pump manually for about 10 times. Thus you will ensure entry of cooling liquid into pump shaft seal gaps, and prevent its leakage.
Bleed the cooling system having opened the bypass valve on the thermostat. Air in the cooling system prevents efficient heat exchange between the engine and antifreeze, and can lead to engine overheating.

Crank the engine manually in order to check valve timing. A set of special tools will be necessary for this.
