Thermostat Golf 5

You should apply to a service station for thermostat replacement. In some modifications of the VW Golf V Hatchback (1K1) car it is located in a hard-to-reach place.

It is necessary to shut off the engine and wait till it cools down before starting works.

First of all, in order to demount the thermostat you will need to disconnect the hose from it and drain cooling liquid into a container prepared in advance.

When installing a new component, a sealing element should be replaced in a mandatory manner, in order to provide hermeticity of connection. The mounting seat for a thermostat should be thoroughly cleaned from dirt and remains of old sealant. Otherwise it will be impossible to ensure tight fit of the gasket.

A sealing compound can be applied on the component surface only in case if such possibility is presupposed by the VW Golf V Hatchback (1K1) car manufacturer. The compound should be distributed evenly along the seal edge. Excess of the sealing compound should be removed, as its ingress into the cooling system is fraught with soiling of the latter.

A new thermostat should be installed so that the copper sensitive element is directed to the cooling liquid flow which comes from the engine, otherwise operability of the component will be violated.

For proper tightening of fasteners you need to use a torque wrench. Optimal tightening torque is indicated by the car manufacturer in the vehicle technical documentation.

Check the VW Golf V Hatchback (1K1) car cooling system for hermeticity. Some kinds of leakages can be found only at warmed up engine. That is why, first of all, inspect thermostat mounting location right after installation, then warm up the engine to the working temperature, let it run for some time, and, after this, perform inspection of the component again.

Check cooling liquid level and top it up if necessary: during disconnection of the hose, significant amount of antifreeze leaks from the cooling system.

Bleed the cooling system of the VW Golf V Hatchback (1K1) car. Air locks prevent free circulation of antifreeze, thus risk of engine overheating increases.
