Replacement of the cooling radiator on the VW Golf V Hatchback (1K1) car is a quite complicated and laborious process. Usually, it involves removal of many assemblies, including the expansion tank and cooling fan. That is why you should contact a service station for help if you have no corresponding experience and skills.

In order to ensure efficiency and longevity of the cooling system components you need to flush it. For this, a special agent should be added to cooling liquid into the expansion tank, and then the engine should be warmed up until it reaches the working temperature, then you need to wait until it cools down, and only after this you should drain antifreeze, having unscrewed the radiator drain plug and having put a container of sufficient volume under it in advance.

The thermostat and connecting pipes should be replaced together with a new radiator. Moreover, you need to visually inspect the support mounts: if they got cracked or hardened – they also should be replaced with new ones. This helps to provide maximal efficiency of the further operation of the VW Golf V Hatchback (1K1) car cooling system, and prevent risk of its components premature wear.

In order to prevent antifreeze leakage, it is recommended to grease new hoses ends with a thin layer of silicon sealing compound.

Fill antifreeze into the cooling system. For this, you need to tighten up all drain taps, unscrew the expansion tank inlet cap and slowly pour in necessary amount of cooling liquid. After this, you need to close the cap and start the engine for 5-6 minutes. Then top up antifreeze till it reaches a needed level.

Bleed the VW Golf V Hatchback (1K1) car cooling system, in order to remove air from it. Air inleakage to the system is the common cause of inefficient operation of the radiator, which leads to engine overheating.

Inspect the radiator, thermostat and connecting pipes for leakage. If antifreeze leakages were found, try tightening the hoses clamps.

Start the engine, and warm it up to the working temperature. Check activation of the fan, and then again check antifreeze level in the tank.
