Interesting facts about NGK lambda sensors
- NGK lambda sensors are produced under the NTK name by a Japanese company, NGK Spark Plug, which was founded in 1936. Today, the company owns 41 subsidiaries, 33 production facilities, and 5 technical centres.
- The first NTK oxygen sensor was produced in 1982.
- The manufacturer’s catalogue includes 3 series of these components: zirconium, titanium, and wideband.
- Zirconium sensors feature thermal stability, reliability, and fast heating to operating temperature. They don’t measure the exact ratio of the air-fuel mixture components, but only track deviations of parameters from a stoichiometric value.
Titanium versions are considered outdated. However, they are still produced for vehicles released before the 2000s. These parts are durable, compact, and have fast response time and heating to operating temperature. They function with no ambient air reference.
Wideband sensors are the most efficient and advanced. Their signal changes proportionally to the amount of oxygen in exhaust gases. This allows the control unit to adjust the fuel supply speed and control the ignition instantly. - The company’s assortment includes specialised and universal parts. The former are produced for particular types of vehicles. They are more expensive but easier to install. The latter are used for a wide range of vehicle models: the 6 types are suitable for 58 million cars. You need basic electrical skills to install them.
