Interesting facts about Bosch lambda sensors
- Production of Bosch lambda sensors started in 1976, when strict requirements for vehicle exhaust emission standards were introduced in the USA.
- Volvo 240/260 was the first car equipped with an oxygen sensor.
- The components are produced by the German company, Robert Bosch GmbH, which was founded in 1866 in Germany. Today, it has 440 subsidiaries located in 60 countries. The company’s products have gained popularity in 150 countries.
- About 45 million oxygen sensors are produced annually at the company’s factories. As of 2016, more than 1 billion Bosch lambda sensors were manufactured.
- Switching-type and wide-band are the most popular series.
- The design of the switching-type version includes a planar sensor element with a built-in measuring cell and a central heater. It measures the residual amount of oxygen in exhaust gases. When the ratio of the constituents of the air-fuel mixture becomes stoichiometric, it generates an instantaneous jump of an electrical signal, and vice versa. Such components withstand operating temperatures up to +1030°С. These components are inexpensive. Sometimes, they can actuate with a short delay, for instance, during sharp acceleration.
- Wide-band sensors measure the air to fuel ratio accurately. The ECU uses the system signal to measure the required fuel amount for producing a balanced air-fuel mixture.
- Sensors should be checked every 30,000 kilometres.
