Before replacing a rear light assembly on the MERCEDES-BENZ M-Class (W163) vehicle, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery: any manipulations associated with electricity require utmost caution.
Remove everything unnecessary from the trunk in order not to impede access to the fasteners of the rear light cluster.
Check location of the rear lights in the MERCEDES-BENZ M-Class (W163) vehicle in the technical documentation. If necessary, remove or pry off the trunk trim panel, or open the service hole cover to reach fasteners of the component.
During installation of new components, check the fasteners. Deformed, rusty or broken components should be replaced. Otherwise, the tail light will not be reliably secured.

Turn ignition on, move the turn indicator switch up or down, holding it in the intermediate position. Check if turn indicators are activated.
Set the MERCEDES-BENZ M-Class (W163) side lights switch to the corresponding position, and check whether the lights work.
Turn ignition on, then press the brake pedal. Check if brake lights are activated.
Turn on ignition, engage the parking brake of the MERCEDES-BENZ M-Class (W163) vehicle, and engage reverse gear. Check if reverse lights are activated.
