Automotive lacquer is a transparent chemical compound based on liquid polymers. It is applied at the final stage of painting a car over the layers of paint. It makes a car look more attractive, protects its parts from negative environmental impacts and ensures the durability of the paintwork.
What are the types of automotive lacquers
By light reflective properties:
- Glossy. When dry, it forms a durable coating which needs regular polishing but is easy to clean.
- Matte. Good for hiding defects that appeared while applying and using it. Parts covered with it do not require polishing. They preserve attractive appearance longer. However, it is more difficult to clean dirt than from glossy surfaces.
By composition:
- Single-component. Supplied as ready-to-use mixtures.
- Double-component lacquers have to be mixed with hardener which is sold together with the active substance.
Depending on the amount of dry residue:
- Solid. They are labelled as HS, UHS or VHS and applied in two layers. Over 80% of the automotive lacquer remains on the surface. They do not form any drips when applied and contain fewer solvents. The lacquers are characterised by long drying time and are not easily sanded.
- Soft. They are labelled as МS. When dry, 40-60% of the lacquer stays on the body. They are applied in two or three layers and dry fast. They are easy to spread and polish.
Many manufacturers also offer products labelled as SR (Scratch Resistant) in their catalogues. They feature special components that make the coating highly durable and flexible. Thanks to which, the paintwork can restore itself in case of slight damage.
Features of using automotive lacquers
- If you need to paint the whole car body, you should visit a maintenance shop. It is possible to eliminate small damage on your own.
- Read the instructions carefully before using automotive lacquer. The manufacturer indicates the dilution ratio, amounts and drying time of each layer as well as the best temperature for applying the compound and its polymerization. The surface you’re going to lacquer has to be cleaned and degreased. Use special chemicals for this purpose. It is also necessary to remove all signs of corrosion from it.
- If you paint only some parts of the car, you should cover the rest of them with masking tape.
- Shake the bottle occasionally when using sprays: this will help you to avoid drips.
- Hold the sprayer at the distance of about 20–25 cm from the target surface.
- Do not use the car until the automotive lacquer is completely dry. It usually takes about two days. To make the car dry faster, you can use special infrared lamps.
