Diesel exhaust fluid is a special chemical agent which helps to reduce the toxicity of exhaust emissions in cars fitted with diesel engines. It is used in catalytic systems which comply with Euro 4–6 standards and use the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology. It is a 32.5 % solution of carbamide in water. It splits nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen, water and carbon dioxide. In some countries it can have other names: in Britain, it is called AUS 32 and in the USA it is known as DEF.
What are the types of diesel exhaust fluid
The agent is manufactured according to the standard formula, so products from different manufacturers have the same composition. The product is available in different packages such as:
- 1 l bottles;
- 5–10 l canisters;
- 200 l barrels;
- 1000 l tanks.
1 litre of the agent is enough to cover about 1000–1200 km for a passenger car and 100 km for a commercial vehicle.
Features of using diesel exhaust fluid
- Carbamide solution is poured through a filling opening into a special tank. It is often located next to the fuel tank and has a corresponding label on it.
- The storage life of carbamide after the package is opened is quite short. Therefore, before buying the product you should check your car’s manual for the volume of the tank. Thus you’ll be able to buy the required amount of diesel exhaust fluid and use it all up.
- When storing and filling, it is important to make sure that no dirt or water get into the agent: this can lead to the failure of the catalytic system.
- Urea features highly corrosive properties. On contact with a number of metals, insoluble salts are formed which can lead to the malfunction of the catalytic converter. Therefore, when filling you should avoid spilling the liquid on metal and some plastic parts.
- It isn’t allowed to dilute urea with other fluids. By no means pour it into your fuel tank.
