What are the types of bumper paints

By purpose:

• For plastic. They are suitable for painting parts made from thermoplastic, polyurethane, thick rubber. When dried, they still stay very flexible.
• For metal. They contain corrosion inhibitors and protect the surface from damage caused by contacts with water and aggressive chemicals.

By the type of coating:

• Glossy. They allow to form a durable, wear-resistant coating which is easy to clean.

Depending on the base:

• Melamine alkyd. They create a durable and wear-resistant coating and need to be applied in several layers. They polymerize at the temperature of 100–130 °С, therefore, special drying conditions are required. Allow creating both gloss and matte coatings.
• Alkyd paints are characterised by the resistance to temperature changes. They allow creating soft transitions so they are often used for painting a certain part of a bumper. They are better for forming matte coating than other paints.
• Acrylic. They create a homogeneous coating resistant to mechanical damage and aggressive chemical agents. Do not change their properties when exposed to ultraviolet rays. It is possible to correct the defects of the paintwork until completely dry.
• Nitrocellulose lacquers need thorough preparations and priming of the surface. Such paints ensure high-quality decorative coating.

Features of using bumper paints

1. To paint a large area, it is better to dismantle the part. Slight damage can be eliminated without removing the component. However, in such a case, areas which are not to be treated should be covered with masking tape.
2. Before it is painted, the surface should be treated as required. It is necessary to fill in the dents, remove dirt, then degrease and polish it.
3. All the works should be performed in a clean room with the door closed in order to avoid dust getting on the surface. The best temperature for painting is about 20 °C.
4. In order to avoid poisoning with toxic substances while spraying bumper paint, it is necessary to use the personal protective equipment.
5. The aerosol should be shaken well not only before use, but during the works as well.
6. They should be used from the distance of 15–25 cm and, as a rule, applied in several layers, each time drying them completely. The drying time varies in the range between 5 and 30 minutes depending on the type of the compound. The bumper can be installed in a day after it has been painted.
