Toyota Starlet was produced from 1973 to 1999. The production of the first generation was organized at the plant in Japan, but then release of these cars was relocated to Indonesia.

Toyota Starlet 40 stock cars appeared in the market in 1973. The design of an exterior of the first cars bore a faint resemblance to the front part of Toyota Corolla. The car was available in three bodies: coupe, sedan and station wagon.

The first generation of the car has not entered the European market because of the great popularity of the Datsun Cherry model released by the competitor of the concern – Nissan company. Sales of the car in Asia were very successful.

The new generation of the Toyota Starlet 60 model which appeared in 1978 was more successful. In the European market the car was delivered in very limited quantity and the station wagon and a hatchback were available. At the same time 3-and 5-door hatchbacks were produced only for export, and in the Japanese market were not on sale.

The second generation of the model became the first Toyota car which began to use the mechanism of the pinion-and-rack gear. In 1980-1983 the car underwent several face liftings. As a result it received rectangular head lights, the shortened plastic bumper. Designers also created Si Limited package which had the sports spoiler, an interior stylized in black-red tones and an ignition system of Multi-point.

Toyota Starlet 70 series appeared in the market in October, 1984. It was available in seven packages. In 1985 production of the Toyota Starlet model was organized in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Start of production of the fourth generation of the Toyota Starlet has fallen on 1989. The Japanese modifications were completed with new Twincam engines. As before, the car was available in 3-and 5-door a hatchback bodies.

In Europe the updated model debuted at the Geneva automobile festival in 1990. Developers have created 6 improved packages of the model and also added two sport ones. The most expensive package included sports seats, the big hatch, a spoiler, and also additional elements of safety of the driver and passengers.

In 1990 the concern presented powerful modification of Toyota Starlet GT Turbo which had all advanced technologies of the concern. The aluminum body decreased the car weight by 1,5 times and the turbocharged engine made it very powerful.

The updated Toyota Starlet 90 series model went in the stock production in 1996. The car body received even more rounded shapes. Developers changed the shape of the bumper, fenders and increased a wheel frame a little. The particular emphasis was placed on technical capabilities of the car.

In Japan sports modification of Toyota Starlet Glanza became very popular. It accelerated to 100 km/h in 8,3 seconds. At the same time it was intended only for the Japanese domestic market. Some modifications were delivered to Great Britain and New Zealand in a private order.

Production of the model was stopped in 1999. The car has been forced out by newer Toyota Echo and Toyota Yaris models.

In the Asian market the model was initially positioned as Toyota Publica Starlet. Only the second generation of the model did not have the Publica prefix.

Toyota Starlet 80/90 was released in Indonesia under the name Fantastic Starlet.
