The Toyota Picnic minivan was released by the Japanese company from 1996 to 2001. Technically the model was the analog of Toyota Ipsum, but was adapted to requirements of the European market. In five years of production one generation of these cars was manufactured. Production of Toyota Picnic cars was organized in Japan.

Toyota Picnic was shown at the Parisian motor show in 1996. In a basis of a new minivan, as well as the Toyota Ipsum twin car, the Toyota A platform was used.

The exterior of the car corresponded to design, traditional for the Japanese company. Slanted headlights with double round reflectors, effective substamps on the hood, the bumpers turning into plastic pads on doors, expressive radiator grille and other elements made Toyota Picnic recognizable and stylish. Unpainted mirror cases were combined with black racks between side glasses.

The passenger compartment differed in the high level of comfort, as qualitative materials were used for its finishing. Thanks to the small cap protecting the dashboard, indicators of scales were easily read out even in a sunny weather. Comfortable seats with head restraints and a possibility of their adjustment provided comfort during continuous driving. The second row of seats was transformed into convenient little tables, and seats of the third row were removable. In a basic package the passenger compartment was trimmed by fabric and plastic, for an extra fee it was possible to order leather trimming.

Two hatches, the second air conditioner, heating of front seats, fog lights and other features were offered as extra options. In a basic package the car was equipped with the power steering, power windows, the air conditioner, heating of mirrors, front airbags, the central lock.

Toyota Picnic cars differed in the high level of reliability and safety. In 2004 the TUV model won first place on reliability among cars with run from 4 to 5 years: the percent of breakdowns has made only 3,9% for 1000 cars. In 2001 the production of these cars was stopped.

Toyota Picnic cars are known also under other names. The model was produced for domestic market of Japan under the name Toyota Ipsum, and in Denmark the car was sold as Toyota SportsVan.
