Suzuki Ignis was a joint project of the Japanese Suzuki Motor Corporation and the American General Motors Corporation. The car replaced Suzuki Cultus in the market. The car was made as a three-door and a five-door hatchback. In the Japanese market, only three-door hatchbacks were available.
The model featured compact dimensions. The body was 3,615 mm long and 1,595 mm wide. The height of the three-door hatchback was 1,540 mm, and that of the five-door one was 1,585 mm. Despite its small size, the five-seat passenger compartment was spacious and ergonomic. The rear seats folded 50/50, which allowed increasing trunk volume.
