Production of Suzuki Alto was launched in 1979, and continues today. The cars are assembled at factories in Japan, China and New Zealand. The model had eight generations.

In the spring of 1979, Suzuki Alto SS30/SS40 model became available. The car was produced as a three-door and a five-door hatchback and wagon. The cars had front-wheel drive, but some cars were fitted with all-wheel drive. The engine was located in the front part of the body.

In the fall of 1984, the second generation Suzuki Alto CA71 was presented. The car was produced as three-door and five-door hatchbacks. In 1986, the car got improved front optics, upgraded suspension, and a new dashboard. The manufacturer greatly improved interior quality. The second generation car was manufactured until 1988, but in China, it was discontinued only in 2013.

Third generation of Suzuki Alto CL11 became available for sale in 1988. The developers added the van to the range of available bodies again. In 1991, the manufacturer improved passive protection of the car from side impacts.

In 1994, the production of fourth generation Suzuki Alto HA11 started. The car was made as three-door and five-door hatchbacks. Compared to previous generations of the model, the front part of the car body became more rounded.

In 1998, the company introduced new Suzuki Alto HA12. The fifth generation model featured rounded body, and original design of headlights. At the end of 2000, the car got a new radiator grill and improved headlights. Production of sixth generation Suzuki Alto HA24 started in 2004. The cars were made as five-door hatchbacks only.

The presentation of seventh generation Suzuki Alto was held at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009. The car exterior became more stylish and modern. The car got large protruding teardrop-shaped headlights, and a more spacious passenger compartment.

Due to the wide use of modern technologies, the car became one of the most fuel-efficient in its class. Suzuki Alto HA25 was developed to meet all requirements of modern environmental standards.

At the end of 2014, the company introduced eighth generation Suzuki Alto. In the spring of the next year, the model became available for sale. The car body became angular again. The car also got stylish trapezoid headlights with round main lights.

Compared to the previous generation, the weight of the car was reduced by 60 kilograms, and the wheelbase length was increased by 100 mm. The designers managed to significantly improve the fuel efficiency of Suzuki Alto HA36's engine. Due to the use of Suzuki Green Technology, the car became even more environment-friendly.

In some countries, Suzuki Alto was sold under brands Suzuki Fronte Suzuki FX, Suzuki Mahran Suzuki A-Star, Mazda Carol, as well as Suzuki Hatch Maruti 800. Third generation Suzuki Alto was also known as Daewoo Tico, and fifth generation - as Chevrolet Alto. Sixth generation Suzuki Alto was sold in the domestic Japanese market as Nissan Pino. Seventh generation of the model is also known as Suzuki Celerio and Nissan Pixo.
