Presentation of Subaru XT vehicles took place at the Detroit Auto Show in 1985. This model immediately caused auto fans and journalists’ interest, who enthusiastically spoke about the new Japanese manufacturer. Especially, there were positive notices of Subaru XT design, pressed by the New York Times noting that the car was significantly differing from the previous Subaru models.

In sober fact, the work which was held in exterior of Subaru XT was colossal. Constructors and designers worked hard to achieve one of the best in the world aerodynamic drag coefficients of a car at that time– 0,29. This rate is considered to be excellent even for modern cars and at the time of Subaru XT release it was revolutionary.

An unusual exterior of the car has also been dictated upon aspiration to achieve excellent aerodynamic characteristics. The rapid silhouette with a wedge-shaped profile, sharp edges and smooth lines of the body, telescopic headlights, a special design of door handles, a windshield wiper that was hidden under the car bonnet and the original rear spoiler - all these features made Subaru XT one of the most unusual and stylish cars of its time. In addition, advantages of this model were efficient fuel consumption and a low noise during the driving.

The interior was also rather unusual: the passenger compartment was compared to an aircraft cabin because of the abundance of buttons on the dashboard and center console. The original form of a gear lever struck the eye.

Subaru XT vehicles had a good basic package. Among basic options of the car there were a climate control system, an air suspension, a power steering and an height-adjustable steering column (dashboard location could be changed for the sake of the driver’s comfort). Headlamp washers, an on-board computer, a part-time 4WD, a hill hold control system were also available as additional options.

The Subaru release was cut off in 1991. More than 90 000 copies of the model were produced. Upon that only 8,000 of them were sold on the Japanese market.

In Australia and New Zealand the car was sold under the name Subaru Vortex, in Japan - Subaru Alcyon.
