Info on SMART ROADSTER model - the right selection of spare parts
Smart RoadsterSmart Roadster production started in 2003 and was in process till 2005. During this period one generation of this model was released. Car production took place in Hambach, France.
Smart Roadster originSmart Roadster engineering planning started in 1998 when heads of company decided to create compact rear drive sport car after successful presentation of Smart Fortwo hatchback. Michael Mauer, Mercedes-Benz designer, was responsible for engineering planning. The first prototype of Smart Roadster was presented during Frankfurt Motor Show in 1999. In 2000 prototype of sport car in coupe body was presented on Paris Motor Show. Hartmut Sinkwitz, new designer, was working at the production model based on these concept cars.
Smart Roadster was presented on Paris Motor Show in 2002. Car was built on lengthened platform of Smart Fortwo and inherited some constructional features. Nevertheless, Smart Roadster sport cars got entirely different design.
Car body consisted of high-force steel carcass and plastic hinged panels. Road-hugging outline, relief sides, projected front fenders and bent inwards hood pointed at sport car character. Double round lights set in oval niches made car look aggressive.
Characteristic feature of this car was 2 luggage compartments - in front part of car (where hood is situated in most modern cars) and behind seats in a special unit above engine. All gauges were round or spherical. Control panel was trimmed with the same fabric as used for upholstery. Interior of expensive configurations was trimmed with leather.
Roof of Roadster folded in 2 steps. First fabric upper part moved backwards with the help of electric drive. Then, guide rails should be removed manually. In this case safety arches behind rear seats and rear windshield didn’t move. Smart Roadster Coupе in targa body had clear panoramic roof, which could be dismounted and put into luggage compartment. For these cars outside-mounted carrier was available. Both cars were available from Brabus tuning-studio. Smart Roadster Coupe Brabus and Smart Roadster Brabus differed from common models in Brabus logos, wheel rims design, double exhaust pipe, front spoiler and radiator grill design. Leather and aluminum inserts were used in interior trim.
Serial production of Smart Roadster was carried out till 2005. The last produced copy of this car is in Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart. In 2006 limited series were produced - Smart Roadster Bluestar and Smart Roadster Collector's Edition.
