Saab 99 model was being produced from 1968 to 1984. In total, 588 643 copies were released. The model was presented by two-door and four-door sedans and the three-door hatchback. Cars were manufactured at the plants of Sweden and Finland.

In the 1960th, because of the success of Saab 96 model, the Swedish autocompany thought of creation of new, more capacious car for expansion of the brand representation in the international market. Works on the new project, called Project Gudmund, began on April 2, 1965. Saab 99 became a result of work of designers led by Sixten Sason.

Work on this new model was kept in a secret. When it was required to test the model in city conditions to test the engine, transmission and a running gear of a pilot model , designers hid "stuffing" of the future model under slightly remade Saab 96 body, having lengthened it by 20 cm and having painted it in gray color. The strange car, called for fun Paddan (Toad), remained unnoticed by the competitors.

The presentation of Saab 99 model took place in Stockholm on November 22, 1967. The new model from the very beginning of sales won an arrangement of motorists. Thanks to the convex windshield and original shape of the hood that closed not only a motor compartment but front fenders also, the drag coefficient of Saab 99 was equal 0,37. It was a great success because for that time drag coefficients of cars were in range from 0,4 to 0,5.

The Saab 99 model was very comfortable, had a soft suspension and ergonomic interior. Seat belts, a safety steering column, the strengthened design of doors, soft upholstery of windscreen pillars and the dashboard, provided the high level of safety, traditional for the Swedish car maker. In 1971 the Saab cars 99 began to be equipped with headlamps wipers and the car maker was awarded by a gold medal of the Swedish Automobile Association.

Originally the model was presented by the two-door sedan. In 1970 the Saab 99 four-door sedan was presented. The three-door Saab 99 Combi Coupé hatch-back which was 10 cm longer than the sedan, became a novelty of 1974 model year. The distance from the lower edge of the open rear door of the car to its bumper made 184 cm that facilitated process of loading of baggage greatly.

In 1972 Saab 99 had number of innovations. The chromeplated bumpers were replaced by plastic ones which absorbed blows at a speed up to 8 km/h and at the same time hold their shape. Heating of a driver's seat was included into the list of basic options. The enlarged direction indicators were placed closer to a hood. In 1977 cars got new, larger head optics. Also by each model year, Saab 99 models were slightly changed.

In 1984 production of the Saab 99 cars was stopped in connection with a release of a new model — Saab 90.
