Saab 9000Saab 9000 is the model of the Swedish cars, within the joint project sharing a platform with the Italian Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and Alfa Romeo 164 models. It was manufactured from 1984 to 1998, 503 087 copies were during this time released. It was presented by a five-door hatchback and a sedan.The cars are assembled in Sweden and Finland.
Saab 9000 I generationIn 1978 four European car makers (Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo and Saab) for optimization of expenses concluded the agreement on production of luxury cars on one uniform platform which got the name Type Four.
The design of model was developed by the expert of Saab Björn Envall and the head of the Italdesign Giugiaro company Giorgetto Giugiaro. The presentation of the five-door Saab 9000 hatchback took place in May, 1984 at a specialized press conference in the Kolmården Game Park.
The car had practically the same exterior as Fiat Croma and Lancia Thema with which it shared a platform, and in the theory the most part of body details of these three models had to be interchangeable. However in practice only several elements of the Italian cars could be installed on Saab 9000: the Swedish cars traditionally had the strengthened doors and the front part of a body for protection of the driver and passengers at front and side crashes. As the Saab 9000 cars were designed on the Italian platform, the ignition lock was not located at the place, traditional for Saab ( between front seats), but at the steering column.
In 1987 the Saab 9000 CDs sedan was released.
Saab 9000 I generation restylingsIn 1991 the hatchback had a small face lifting of the front part and got an alphabetic prefix to the name — Saab 9000 CS. In the same time the pre-restyled hatchback had an alphabetic index CC for prevention of confusion because its production continued after release of the restyled model.
Restyling of Saab 9000 CDs sedan took place in 1994. The radiator grille, front and rear optics were changed. Production of sedans ended in 1997. Hatchbacks were manufactured till 1998.
