The midsize Saab 9-7X SUV became the first model of the Saab company which production was conducted outside Sweden. Cars were released from 2005 to 2009.

Saab 9-7X became the most expensive SUV made by the General Motors company. As well as other SUVs, designed on the GMT360 platform (Buick Rainier, Oldsmobile Bravada, Isuzu Ascender, Chevrolet TrailBlazer), the Saab 9-7X cars were manufactured in Moraine(Ohio, the USA).

Front part of the car drew attention to itself by the original chromeplated radiator grille, that was traditionally for Saab model divided into three blocks, a massive bumper with a small air intake, narrow and long head lights. Massive wheel arches gave a really off-road looking style to the body of 9-7X model. However this impression was deceptive: because of a low road clearance and lack of bumper protection the car should be operated in city conditions and on well-planned routes.

Decoration of the interior was traditional for Saab: the ignition lock located on the centre between the driver and passenger seats, the central console was similar to the plane control board. Soft plastic was used in the interior, decorative wooden inserts could be replaced by aluminum ones. The dashboard was the same as in Saab 9-5, it had a slightly concave shape and all devices were visible to the driver.

The impressive sizes of the SUV (length — 4907 mm, width — 1918 mm) guaranteed comfortable seating to all passengers. The baggage compartment, which had the volume of 1161 l, could be increased to 2268 l with folded rear seats. All Saab 9-7X cars were serially equipped with a towbar: SUVs with the most powerful engine were capable to pull along the trailer weighing three tons.

Saab 9-7X was one of the first cars of the Swedish autocompany which were standardly equipped with an four-wheel drive. The buyers, who did not plan to drive the car in extreme road conditions, could order Saab 9-7X with a drive gear on one shaft only. As the Saab 9-7X model was positioned as luxury model, a serial equipment of cars was quite varied. Leather seats, cast disks, bixenon headlights, the on-board computer, a cruise control system, two-zonal climate control, heating of front seats, the CD changer were included in a basic set.

In 2007 sporty Saab 9-7X Aero model was manufactured, externally it was easily distinguished from Saab 9-7X by existence of front and rear spoilers, mouldings and 20-inch cast disks. Saab 9-7X Aero became the most powerful car in the history of the Swedish auto company.

In 2008 sales of Saab 9-7X decreased by 30%. The General Motors company decided not to carry out a restyling of the model and not to continue its release after 2009.
