Saab 9-5The Saab 9-5 model replaced the Saab 9000 model. It was produced from 1997 to 2011. The Saab 9-5 cars differed in the high level of safety and won 5 stars in the Euro NCAP tests twice, in 2003 and 2009.
Saab 9-5 YS3EThe first generation of Saab 9-5 was released in the summer of 1997 and at that time it was presented only by the sedan bode. The five-door station wagon appeared in 1999. The basis of the model was formed by the GM 2900 platform. The design of the car was developed by specialists of the Saab Style Center. At its large size, the Saab 9-5 sedans differed in an excellent drag coefficient — 0,29 (at station wagons — 0,31).
The spacious interior of Saab 9-5 was made in gray or black color. Elements of an interior were made of soft plastic of better quality, than in the previous model. It allowed to get rid of foreign scratches during the movement. The dashboard reminded the control board on the plane. Thanks to its original form, all devices were perfectly visible. The ignition lock located between front seats. For an additional fee, it was possible to order dashboard made of a polished aluminum or plastic that imitates wood. The trunk volume of the sedan made 500 l, at a station wagon it could vary from 416 to 1490 l because of an opportunity to fold a back row of seats.
The Saab 9-5 models were sold well that was caused by their reasonable price and good safety level that was higher, than cars of the same class of other producers had, it was provided by a framework from high-strength steel, frontal and side airbags, fog lights, the ABS, ESP systems, and also Night Panel steering illumination of the dashboard. On the Saab 9-5 model for the first time there were SAHR active head restraints (Saab Active Head Restraints) which reduce a risk of neck bones injury of the driver and front passenger by 75% at rearward impact.
Saab 9-5 YS3E restylingsIn 2001 the Saab 9-5 model was changed. Bumpers lost protection against small damages, at the same time became more elegant. The new materials of an upholstery of interior were used.
In 2006 at the Motor Show in Paris a global restyling of the model was presented. Changes concerned the front part of the car: headlights and a radiator grill had the chromeplated edging, the bumpe rhad aero dynamic shape, new air intakes appeared. Also the design of the rear part of the car was changed. The dashboard was restyled, materials of high quality began to be used in the interior decoration.
Production of the restyled sedans was stopped in July, 2009, the release of station wagons came to the end in February, 2010.
Saab 9-5 YS3GThe presentation of the second generation of the model took place in autumn of 2009 in Frankfurt. The basis of new Saabs 9-5 was formed by the GM Epsilon platform. The design of cars was changed according to the new corporate style of Saab borrowed from the Saab Aero X concept car. Because of the shortened and raised rear part, sedans looked like sporty coupes.
At the Geneva Motor Show in the spring of 2011, the presentation of the second generation of station wagon of Saab 9-5 SportCombi took place, however, despite a quantity of already prodused pilot models and prototypes, the station wagon didn't go to the stock production because of bankruptcy of the Saab company. In March, 2011, the production of sedans of the second generation stopped. Only 11280 copies of this model were manufactured.
